Job Description

The Public Relations Specialist supports agency efforts to identify and implement effective public relations strategies for nonprofit, philanthropic, and government clients. You will work across the team to support the production of excellent end products in a fast-moving, rapidly changing environment. You will work closely with project managers across several teams to assist with public/media relations and copywriting/editing to secure high-quality client exposure through earned media and increase agency presence.


Essential Job Duties

Learning (15%)

  • Participate in professional development and learning activities to continuously improve leadership, management, project management, and writing skills
  • Read and reflect on agency readings; connect readings to short- and long-term goals for team and agency
  • Participate in agency team meetings, professional development check-ins, and other internal meetings, as needed
  • Maintaining high-level of organization for print and digital files and materials

Public Relations and Communications (85%)

  • Meet and liaise with clients during projects and campaigns to support the implementation of public relations strategy
  • Work with team members to develop and implement public relations campaigns that meet client goals, objectives, and budget parameters
  • Support the development of copy and art for earned, social, and paid media campaigns
  • Conduct regular research on clients, client fields and industries, and related matters to understand opportunities to share information across multiple platforms, pitch stories, and build relationships using MuckRack, Mention, and other monitoring tools
  • Work closely with digital team to identify interesting stories, news, and other content to share on client social media channels
  • Draft and edit copy included in headlines and body copy for all public relations products including press releases, media advisories, press statements, opinion editorials, letters to the editor, etc.
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and/or annual earned media reports for clients.
  • Connect and build relationships with influential media outlets and journalists to pitch stories and ideas about client announcements, campaigns, products, news, etc.
  • Support the establishment of sustainable, strategic public relations plans for clients and the agency
  • Understand the goals, audience, and message for client campaigns and assist with the drafting of compelling, clear, and concise copy to suit
  • Correspond with press/media to schedule interviews, pitch stories, and obtain added value public relations/earned media opportunities for clients
  • Monitor, compile, and distribute clips for clients on a regular basis; update keyword searches to ensure the most timely and relevant news information is being gathered
  • Assist with the planning, coordination, and execution of press conferences, events, and similar activities for clients
  • Assist with keeping projects on time and within budget

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, English, journalism, marketing, business administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Technical knowledge and understanding of public relations strategies, metrics, and tracking
  • Experience using media monitoring tools, such as MuckRack, Cision, or Mention, for research and pitching
  • Project management and organization skills
  • Ability to learn and adapt quickly in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment
  • Ability to handle the pressure of meeting tight deadlines
  • Intrinsically motivated self-starter, team player, critical thinker, and effective communicator
  • A healthy dose of curiosity
